A voucher deal saw us taking in a midweek breakfast at Bicicletta in NewActon, housed in the now Peppers Gallery Hotel (formerly Diamant Hotel). I’ve eaten here quite a few times before with reasonable success, but brekkie was a disappointment. The whole thing was pretty lacklustre and average – very average.
Many years ago, the decor seemed quite modern though not edgy, but in the intervening years nothing has changed and, apart from a couple of interesting statement light fittings, it’s quite non-descript. Think vinyl leather bench seats, chunky pine furniture, all a bit bland. The place was pretty empty. Maybe that was a sign.
The menu offers standard breakfast choices – muesli, bacon and eggs and all that. Our choices tasted okay but didn’t look very pretty. See for yourself with the attached. No love in the presentation of either dish – just whacked straight on the plate. The pancakes were a good size and quite fluffy, but the miserly dollop of berry compote (straight from a can, I suspect) and a spoonful of ricotta unceremoniously housed in little bowls was similarly unattractive – and a bit meagre really. Maybe the described honey would have helped had it been drizzled artistically in random spirals, but it was missing in action. The only real surprise for the morning was the small shard of plastic in a mouthful of pancake.
Not a lot else to say. The coffee was good and the service friendly, but that’s not enough really for breakie out, not when there’s so much else on offer now at NewActon and Braddon. Not enough to get you going back again in any case. Not for breakfast at least – maybe pizza for lunch is the better option here.
Peppers will have to try a bit harder on this one.
Presentation: care factor of about 2.5.
